Here is a list of the good and not-so-good potty-training equipment we used for Keilani:
The good:
“Potty Power” DVD
The Potty Power DVD continues to be a hit in our household more than 10 days after its first viewing. I really think that this video inspired Keilani to be a “big kid” and to really want to use the potty. I highly recommend it!

“Elmo’s Potty Time” DVD
“Elmo’s Potty Time” is another great DVD that Keilani loves. It has a lot of catchy tunes and features all of the Sesame Street characters so if your child is into Sesame Street he will love this video.

Sesame Street Travel Folding Toilet Seat
The Sesame Street Folding Toilet Seat actually gets sub-par reviews on Amazon.com, but I love it—it folds up really small, fits on all the toilets we’ve tried it on with no slipping, and Keilani likes the characters.

Potette
The Potette ROCKS. This little seat has saved us on many an occasion! It is super-compact, comes with disposable liners to contain the pee and poop, and really makes it possible for your child to go potty anywhere, especially when they are getting the hang of “holding it” early on and can’t make it all the way to the nearest public restroom. We take this with us everywhere—it is extremely portable.

“Just One Day” Potty Training Book
I found this book very helpful despite the misleading “one day” premise. I do think that the basic method is very sound and definitely kick-started our potty-training process with Keilani. She loved teaching the doll, receiving “special treats”, and of course her “potty party”, and I think as long as you understand that “one day” is probably not accurate for many children you can get a lot out of this method.

Potty Patty Doll
Keilani LOVED (and still loves) Potty Patty! It really did help Ross and I explain to her what we expected and “how” to use the potty, and Keilani loved making the doll go pee and also feeding her. |
Potty Training Reward Chart and Stickers
This was the best reward chart and sticker system that we bought—the stickers actually stuck to the chart, it is magnetic so you can post it at your child’s level on your refrigerator, and you can paste a picture of your child on it to personalize it in addition to writing in their name. It’s great and Keilani loves putting her little stickers on this!
“Big Girl” (or boy) Training Pants
These cotton training pants are terrific—they are slightly thicker than “real” underwear so will help absorb accidents a little better, but are SO different from any diaper that your child will really understand that they are wearing “big kid” underwear.
Baby Bjorn Step Stool
This was a fine step stool to help Keilani get on the “big people’s” toilet. |
Jellybeans, or your favorite candy!
Keilani LOVES jellybeans (we discovered this at Easter this year) so these were a perfect “special treat” for her—small enough that she wouldn’t be sugar-crazed if she had a lot of successes but special enough that they would motivate her. (Note: can you believe Amazon also has these listed under the “Health and Personal Care” section of their website?) |
The not-so-good:
Baby Bjorn Potty Chair
There is nothing inherently bad about this potty chair but Keilani has always wanted to be just like Mommy and Daddy and so wanted to use the “big” toilet from the get-go. Also I think this one was a little difficult for her to sit on—it has a large “splash guard” in the front (I think for boys?) and was a little tough for her to sit on comfortably. A lot of people have this and love it though! |

Sesame Street Potty Training Reward Sticker Chart
These stickers were just NOT sticky enough and fell all over the place! Keilani LOVES Sesame Street so I thought I would get her this sticker chart, but it really was a bust and just made a mess. Not recommended. |
